Not Even Good Enough for Granny
The Toyota Yaris. A car that every millenial knows or has heard of at some point, it has been the car of choice as a first car for new drivers and for OAPs alike. However, while the first generation was funky and fun, the second one was fat and mediocre. Can this third one do what the first one did, now in the face of stiff competition? What can I say about the way it looks? Nothing really, because there is nothing going on here. It's just... a car. 4 wheels, 4 doors, headlights and taillights. Sure, the face lift has perked things up a bid with the new X style graphic on the front, but it has none of the cheekiness of the Ford Fiesta or the enthusiasm of the Mazda 2. The interior styling is also a bit of a let down. In an age where there are modern and funky interiors such as the ones in the Chevrolet Sonic and the Fiesta, the Yaris has nothing to show here either. The plastics are unusually low rent for this type of car, and the whole thing looks like a car built in the Far East, for the Far East. The touchscreen system is good and I'm glad to see it comes as standard, but where is the 3D instrument binnacle we used to get in the old car? Or the airconditioning controls which were laid out like a stoplight? There is no surprise and delight here that's for sure. What may surprise you though is the amount of space on offer here, esepcailly in the back. That boxy non-styling has it's advantages, since you can fit four full sized adults back here in comfort. This is something the Mazda 2 and the Fiesta can only dream of. Maybe driving this car will bring back the sprightliness of the old one? Nope. Not even slightly. The engine is slow and lethargic to rev, the steering is vague, and suspension skips about on poor surfaces. Drive it on a bad road and you're jostled all over the place. It's noisy too, with the engine booming at high speed and a noticeable amount of wind noise. Road noise is well contained though. The car has one claim to fame though, its tight turning circle makes it a boon in the city, and the light steering makes it easy to manoeuvre. Still, rivals drive much better in all respects. So the Yaris is distinctly average, amongst rivals which are excellent. As a drivers car, rekindling the fun of the first one, it falls flat on its face. As a smooth and easy car to drive (for the older ones among us), it is too noisy and not relaxed enough. It is better as a tool to carry four passengers across the city, but again rivals do it better. If you want fun, buy a Fiesta or a Mazda 2, if you want practicality, buy a Honda Jazz. The Yaris has no case for itself here.
